Danny does hear it, his smile visibly faltering before it gives way entirely and he lifts up a palm. "Okay. Wrong words, sorry."

It's not the best start and Danny can feel the bitter chill from Kevin's reply, which is all the more proof that he'd really overstepped the mark. He's ashamed to admit that he even needed confirmation but Danny's not used to hitting, then feeling bad, so a big part of him had been hoping he'd been wrong and Kevin had just gotten over it already.
